Florida Launch Lacrosse takes off in South Florida
Taking off with four goals in the first quarter, the Florida Launch held on to beat the New York Lizards 11-8 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton. Launch attackman Kieran McArdle had four goals in the game. McArdle, a rookie, leads Major League Lacrosse rookies in goal scored. The Launch (4-2) next play at home on at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton. For more information visit the Florida Launch Lacrosse website.
McArdle led the initial first-quarter charge for the Launch with a goal and assist. Launch attackman Kevin Cunningham also had a goal and an assist in the first frame and provided the pass to score an assist on McCardle's fourth goal. McArdle, Cunningham and attackman Casey Powell, a goal in each of the first two quarters, helped give the Launch a 6-3 lead at halftime. The New York Lizards (3-2) never recovered after trailing 4-1 after the first quarter. The Lizards were led by middleman Matt Striebel who got open across the Launch defense for a goal and assist. In the third quarter, the Lizards evened things out by matching the Launch two goals apiece in the second, third and three goals each in the fourth quarter. But, it was too late for the Lizards who got off to a slow start. Launch goalie Brett Queener allowed only one goal in that first frame, and took advantage of a slow Lizards team to run out saves on three separate occasions to midfield where he passed to his offense. He was gritty too, yelling at teammates and even pleading with officials that he should have been given a save when a whistle stopped a play where Queener made a save.
"Better give me credit for that save! That was a great save and I deserve credit!" yelled Queener.
McArdle's fellow rookie middleman Chris LaPierre had a goal, Launch attackman Garret Thul had two goals and middleman Jordan Hall rounded out the scoring for Florida. The Launch travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a 7 p.m. match against the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday, June 14, and return in home play in a rematch against the Rochester Rattlers on Friday, June 20.
Florida Launch expansion pro men’s lacrosse team holding their own in the MLL
Tumbling into Boca Raton like a rocky mountain avalanche with six-shooters drawn and firing away at their newfound enemy, the Denver Outlaws ousted the Florida Launch 14-10 in the team’s inaugural Major League Lacrosse (MLL) game at FAU Stadium. Denver (1-0) took an 11-1 lead into halftime and then strapped in their seats as the home team Florida Launch mounted a comeback. Florida Launch attack man Josh Amidon scored the first ever goal for the expansion team and Casey Powell had a hat trick plus three assists for the Florida Launch (0-1). Early on in the contest, the Outlaws enjoyed a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Denver extended the lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter before Amidon broke free through the Outlaws defense and Powell found him open after Amidon made a cut off of a wheel play and scored to close the gap to 6-1 at 3:22 into the second quarter.
Denver continued their onslaught deep into the second period to take an 11-1 halftime lead in front of 1,208 at FAU Stadium on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. In the third quarter, the Launch fought back with six goals and shutout the Outlaws just like Denver did to them in the first quarter. The Launch were led by Amidon’s two point goal just 33 seconds into the second half, four minutes later Powell scored his second goal along with six other players in the third period to narrow the score to 11-7 Denver going into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, the Launch pulled within two goals when Andrew Scalley scored his second of the game and Powell put his second goal into the net to narrow the score to 11-9. Florida head coach Stan Ross began to make glances at the time on the scoreboard, the loud 1,208 in attendance cheered loudly for the Launch and the player on the sideline amped up the lineup in the game. It looked inevitable that the Launch would come back to tie the Outlaws by the end of the fourth quarter. But, Denver scored three straight goals to lead 14-9 when Powell scored his third and the final goal of the game with 3:51 left to pull the Launch within four to 14-10.
In their second ever franchise game, the Florida Launch hosted the Charlotte Hounds at FAU Stadium and notched their first ever win. Garrett Thul has a hat trick on seven shots and Powell added two more goals and two more assists on the young season.
“It was a great first win for the program and especially in front of our home crowd,” said Launch head coach Stan Ross. “Our guys played hard this weekend and deserved this win. We are now looking towards next weekend and taking on the Ohio Machine.”
In their third game of the Launch’s first ever three-game home stand, the Launch took off early with a 4-1 lead when the Ohio Machine came to FAU Stadium. But, Ohio came back and took a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter, before a 8-8 tie, and unassisted goal and Crowley’s fifth goal of the night, the game winner 10-9 to give the Launch an early (2-1) season win. In the game, rookie Kieran McArdle scored the first goal of his young career.
